snapped timing belt
Snapped timing belt. This happened on the A9 just north of Stirling.I've replaced the rocker arms and timing belt. the engine fires but badly. My garage want to know if it is likely to be a case of bent valves, or are they missing something else, before they charge me a fortune to remove the cylinder head etc.
Re: snapped timing belt
Most likely the valves are bent, possible damage to pistons, too, I'm afraid.
This is what's known as an 'Interference' engine, ie belt breaks = damage.
Really sorry to hear this, but I'm not sure I would let this garage work on your Bongo if they don't know this. They are very unlikely to know how to bleed it once its back together.
Very best getting sorted.
Edit: Which engine do you have?

Re: snapped timing belt
check the cam hasnt snapped under the bearings, and the conrods.
if its snapped the rockers it may have lifted the head also, check its straight,

Re: snapped timing belt
It's got to be one of the most brilliant automotive design ideas of all time - fitting timing belts to 'interference' engines.
Am I right in believing that VW have gone back to chains in the T5 series? And I seem to think I heard that the belt in the T4 also drives the water pump!

This is what happened to my brother inlaws Vectra 1.9 CDTi cambelt drives water pump the water pump siezed and bang luckly the rocker arms are weaker than the valves all 16 rocker arms snapped but no other damage internally.

Re: snapped timing belt
Hi Ian,its most likely that valve damage has occurred (this engine is not fitted with weakened type valve gear as V/H etc)
The garage need to carry out a Compression test to prove the fault before removing the head. What garage is the vehicle in?.
Good Luck.
