Battery light

Post by bongoroy63 » Tue Mar 31, 2015 2:08 pm

Another little niggle appeared today on Bobby. Took him out and noticed the battery/charge light stayed on. Never had this before. The symptoms are that if I accelerate the light dims but does not disappear completely. If going down a hill the light glows brighter when I let my foot off the accelerator. All the electrics are working fine and it started fine this morning.
Any ideas?

Check your alternator belt is tight ... but when that happened on my V6 .. the light would go off at over 2000rpm .. and come back on at at lower revs ..

Turned out to be the diode pack on the alternator .. rather than a new alternator a local place fixed it for me ..

The charge lamp staying on indicates that the alternator is not generating power ..... either the belt or faulty alternator in some way.

OK. As it has decided to stop raining on the Mendips today I went out and had a play with the alternator. I thought the belts were a bit slack so adjusted the tension. Started him up. Light stayed on!
How and what do I test on the alternator to find out if it's faulty? I'm not very good with electrics so please the answers simple!!!

Right. Had a look at the link. Very helpful, however I think I've resigned myself to the fact the alternator is knackered. There is a company not far from me who repairs them. Before I give him a call, what make alternators are on the Bongos? Lucas, Bosch......? Or is it some Japanese make no ones ever heard of? He's bound to ask when I phone him!!

Depends on year and engine type, the fixings and style varies!
This company are quite good, but getting it refurbished locally is probably cheaper!
Put Bongo in the search box and it will show you all the types as well as starters...
