Scavenger fan relay

Post by Cynog » Tue Apr 05, 2022 9:10 pm

Okay, I give up! Can anyone tell me where I find the scavenger fan relay on my 2000 2.5 Diesel please?
It's no longer working - so I can't listen for a click. As the scavenger sensor is good and the wiring to and from the sensor is sound (and the fuse hasn't blown) I think the problem must be a defective relay. But where do I look for it?
We're off on holiday on Friday and the van has just started playing up!
I'll be very grateful for a pointer. Thanks.

Its B6-06 second row of relays in front of the drivers position on the right, or it was upto 1999 at least ;-)

Its fused from the 30 Amp ADD Fan both for the motor and the relay.

Ah! Thank you Geoff. That's a great help. I'll get back under the bonnet today and see if I can sort it out. I'll let you know.

Thanks Geoff! I really appreciate your time and trouble in responding to my query.
Those six relays have moved to just behind the front panel alongside the radiator on the later model, but I spotted them easily enough when I knew what I was looking for. And to my considerable relief the scavenger relay proved unreliable under testing.
For next week's trip I've removed the dodgy relay and wired across the motor supply terminals to a fused switch just below the dashboard. I'll order a new relay when we get back home.
I was having great difficulty starting the engine after any run of more than a few miles. This was the case whether the engine was warm or cold when I tried to start. I also had difficulty driving in queues of traffic, so I assumed the fuel must be getting far too hot. Then it dawned on me that I hadn't heard the scavenger fan recently!

Yes the diagram isn't the best for precise location :-) They have also been known to move various relays around on some versions without apparent reason! The covers on those relays do pop off and then you can gain access to clean contacts if required.

I doubt very much if the Diesel fuel getting too hot is your problem, does the vehicle have a SF warning light on the dash.

Sorry about the delay in responding to you teenmal - we've been away Bongo-ing for several days without any access to internet.
You are probably right in what you say. But the scavenger fan relay is definitely faulty and I'll replace that first. I don't have a warning light on the dash but when I removed the relay and wired it directly, it worked only occasionally.
As I have just had the turbo waste-gate refurbished the garage had replaced the engine oil and I wonder whether they used too light an oil, leading to excessive oil fumes in the breather system when the motor gets hot, leading to it choking.
I would suspect the EGR system but I cleaned that out over the winter and I have no warning lights flashing at me, so I imagine it's not that.
New relay, change of engine oil, check for air and oil leaks, and probably some serious head scratching. Great vehicles when they are going well, a real nuisance when they play up.
