v reg flashing glow plug (New Shape)

Post by Greg B » Wed Sep 01, 2010 9:23 pm

Hi
I have recently become the owner of our second bongo (bought from JAL in spring). (Last one got driven into one night – while parked!)

The new one is a v reg – new shape. It is out of warranty.

Recently the glow plug has started flashing – a steady rhythmic on off on off but only once warmed up.
How do I go about sorting this problem? The diagnostic sheet says I need to know if it is pre or post 1999. Is there a way to tell the age exactly as this one seems on the cusp? Or are all new shape Bongos post Sept 1999?

I have read many posts while list so many possible problems. I’d like to be able to tell my local garage man where to start. (Cos I have no clue about fixing engines!)

Thanks for any advice.

You can get the exact date and details by using the VIN number see this thread http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... 5&p=384788

Oh and welcome to the forum!

Hi Greg.

The answer is out there somewhere. There was a thread a couple of years ago from Ron Miel who found a link to the Russian Bongo peeps with a database that if you stick your VIN in, it tells you the actual date it rolled off the production line & what spec it came with at the time.

I've had a good half hour searching & cant find the link but someone a bit more savvy than me may be able to find it . . . . .

Mine is June 99 I believe on a T plate and is the new shape ... petrol though ... ( assume petrol ones don't have glow plugs :D )

do you notice a loss of power when the flashing starts? on that age its usually the wastgate actuator/EGR controller valve, why dont you bridge the diagnositcs port and it will tell you what the problem is, irelevant of the year.

Thanks for all the prompt advice and links - this group is great

I will try to find out the exact year via this route

Thanks Julian for this. Yes power dies away - (limp mode?) and climbing hills is a challenge when laden

Think this can be done somewhere in the passenger footwell. (But I thought diagnostics were different depending on year)

Not sure I will try myself though. I will get my garage to have a look. It goes in on Thursday.

Thanks again

have a look at this page;
http://www.philmcfadden.co.uk/MazdaDiagnosticBox.htm, tell the garage to bridge pins C and E and that will put it into engine diagnostics mode, if they cant read the code, tell them to give me a call and i'll talk them through it.
