V6 cam / rocker cover bolt oil seals

Post by Simon Jones » Wed Jun 11, 2014 12:33 pm

Got a slight weep on a few of the seals for the mounting points which have not improved even after nipping them up slightly. There are quite a few to change: at least 10 each side as I recall & the only place I've seen them is AVA (MazdaBongo.com) for £3.95 each so its going to be a few quid to change both sides: http://www.mazdabongo.com/catalog/engin ... -v6-petrol

Anyone got any other suggestions or thoughts on options please? The top left one is a bit oily here and some others have got worse since I took the photo.

Red stag jointing compound on the original washer seals
Might be worth a try

Yours are much less leaky than mine. I tightened mine up a little and they're better... for now.

The part seems to be 10-237, so it could be these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/10-Mazda-929- ... 2ebf1bc438

10 of them for £2.99 plus £5.94 postage from the US. Might be worth a gamble. :)

are they the same as the diesel rockers ones simon, do they have a soft steel tube insert that spaces them from the head face.
if yes they stop you crushing the gasket, but if tightened more than allowed it causes the tube to crush and distort.
the way i got round this was to remove them all and grind off one mm of each tube, this allows the cam cover to sit lower and seal the gasket better and re seats the top rubber seal tighter.

even works with an old age hardened gasket on the diesel. 8)

Cheers for the info. I've got a few spare diesel ones to have a look at and I'll probably order the set mentioned.

UPDATE: Decided to order 20 from AVA for £76 (eek) and have replaced the 9 worst ones and will do the rest at a later date. Unlike the diesel ones, they don't have the metal tube in the middle so there is nothing to stop them compressing further. Bit fiddly to remove as some of the rubber broke away and had to be extracted from the cam cover with a bent paper clip. The old rubber was quite hard and brittle and would not have sealed any better even if nipped up a bit tighter. I used a smear of red Hermatite compound on the new seals and refitted them hand tight and a smidge. This photo shows two new ones and one knackered one which can be seen to be compressed quite flat:

I've ordered a set from the US anyway, but at least with the AVA ones they arrived next day which meant I was able to fix the problem before the next trip.
